PETERSFIELD. —The eighth annual conversazione of the Young Men’s Improvement Society, was held on Tuesday evening, in the National Schoolroom, under the presidency of the Rev. M A. Smelt, in the unavoidable absence of our excellent rector, who always takes lively interest in the proceedings of the Society. The capacious schoolrooms were most tastefully decorated with suitable mottoes and artistic devices, and when lighted up in the evening presented a very imposing sight. The chairman opened the proceedings with a few appropriate remarks, and then proceeded to call for the several pieces as they appeared on the programme. The entertainment consisted of glees, speeches, recitations, dialogues, &c. and was taken part in by the following members:—Messrs. Macfarland, Lee, Taylor, Forder, Robertson, Privett, Meeres, Graves, Morey, Carter, Finley, Pocock, Pullen, Caplen, and Blacktnore. At the conclusion of the entertainment, which lasted four hours, the Chairman proposed a vote of thanks to the young men and warmly congratulated them on the very successful issue of their performance. It was seconded by the Rev. H. Haigh, and it is needless to say was warmly responded to by a very large and respectable audience. The proceeds, after defraying necessary expenses, are to go to the aid of the Lancashire Relief Fund. A vote of thanks was also accorded to Mr. Eames, for the kind loan of his piano for the occasion.
