YOUNG MEN’S IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.—At the last meeting of this society, Mr. John Meeres in the chair, a paper was read by Mr. Wm. Carter on ‟Great Men of the day.” At the commencement the opener brought forward names of distinguished men in America, Italy, and France. He then gave a concise and instructive account of the doings of some of England’s great men, embracing Lords Palmerston, Brougham, Russell, and others. Remarks were afterwards made by Messrs. Macfarland, Lee, Wyatt, Ayling, Robertson, Forder, Gutsell, Privett, and the chairman, in the course of which other characters were introduced. The Rev. M. A. Smelt, vice-president, made a few remarks on the subjects which had been brought before the society during the past session, and concluded by declaring the meeting the last of the session.
