PETERSFIELD, Feb. 1.
YOUNG MEN’S IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY—At the last meeting of this society, Mr. Robertson in the chair, a paper was read by Mr. Macfarland, entitled ‟Brother Jonathan.” The opener gave a pleasing and instructive insight into the various institutions, and alluding, in conclusion, to the happy termination of the Trent affair, said it was a cause of thankfulness to the Almighty for His great goodness in controlling the minds of rulers and people, and preserving them from the untold evils of the war that seemed to threaten. Remarks were afterwards made by Messrs. Small, Privett, Meeres, Carter, Gutsell, and Wyatt. It was announced that the next meeting would be opened by Mr. Forder, on the question, ‟What benefits resulted from the conquests of Edward III?”
