YOUNG MEN'S IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY—This society held its first open night for the season on Tuesday last when the Vice-President, the Rev. T. Field, read an essay on "the advantages of constitutional government," in which, after cursorily glancing at the various forms of government which have existed in the world in past ages, the rev. gentleman divided his subject into three heads, viz.:—The greater protection for possessors, the greater facility for acquirers, and thirdly, that there is hope in the race of life for all; noticing as one of the strongest pillars of our own glorious constitution, the fusion of classes which so greatly tends to increase the stability of the structure. The essay was followed by a discussion, in which several members took part. The chair was occupied by Mr. Duplock. A considerable number of persons were present, and all appeared well pleased. We are glad to learn that the society starts with an accession of new members. Mr. Edwin Privett has been appointed Hon. Secretary vice Mr. Gilbert Henson, who has left the neighbourhood.
