ALTON, PETERSFIELD AND PORTSMOUTH RAILWAY.

The present improvement in travelling is brought home to nearly every man’s door now–a–days, but unfortunately for us, our town has been altogether neglected, for while lines have been constructed on either hand, Petersfield has been left to shift for itself. Our hopes were raised when the Portsmouth direct line was in contemplation, but hitherto we have only indulged in pleasing anticipations in order to be disappointed. We trust the meeting to be held this day will be productive of some more happy result, and if the subject is taken up in earnest, we feel convinced that we shall succeed in establishing a railway which will not only be productive of a vast amount of accommodation, but, from the nature of the country it will pass, prove a profitable investment for capital.—Portsmouth Guardian.
