ADDRESS of the Nobility and Gentry of the County of SOUTHAMPTON :—
To the Queen’s Most Excellent Majesty,
May it please your majesty,
We, the undersigned Nobility and Gentry of the County Southampton, beg to approach your Majesty, with those feelings of affectionate Loyalty, which your Majesty’s beneficent rule is fitted to inspire; and with a deep sense of the singular advantages, which the nation has hitherto enjoyed in its adherence to the Reformed Apostolical Church of these Realms.
We have heard with indignation, that the Pope has issued a document, in which he has assumed a power inconsistent with your Majesty’s lawful prerogative and supremacy, and has asserted claims in contrariety to the rights of the Established Church.
We regard this document as so pernicious in its consequences, that we humbly pray that your Majesty will be graciously pleased to adopt such measures as may be needful to maintain the rights of the Crown, and to check all foreign aggression upon your royal prerogative. And that your Majesty, with the concurrence of your Parliament, will authorise the adoption of any additional enactments which the circumstances of the case may require.
And your petitioners will ever pray.
